TE PAPA ŌTĀKARO AVON RIVER PARK

Ecological restoration, green infrastructure and civic life at the intersection of river and city.

Avon River Park forms the signature public realm project of Christchurch’s post-earthquake rebuild, reshaping over two kilometres of riverfront into a pedestrian-priority promenade. The Terraces Precinct re-connects the city with the Ōtākaro Avon River, establishing the river corridor as an organiser and catalyst of urban renewal.

The design responds to the tension between river (fluid) and city (grid), and to the opportunity created by widespread urban disruption. Rather than reinstate a vehicle-dominated streetscape, the strategy thickens the river edge - layering ecological restoration, civic occupation and commercial vitality into a new shared-use corridor. Oxford Terrace is recalibrated from conventional street to pedestrian-focused riverfront that turns the city to face the river.

Sculptural stone-clad terraces and stepped seating form a series of inhabitable riverbanks where city geometry overlaps with organic water movement. The City Promenade establishes a continuous and legible edge, integrating cycling, public transport and limited vehicle access within a generous public realm. The new tram circuit reinforces connectivity while strengthening the precinct as a hospitality and gathering destination.

Avon River Park operates as civic spine, ecological corridor and social stage. It catalyses new economic activity while restoring the mauri of the river corridor - demonstrating how landscape-led urbanism can guide regeneration not as embellishment, but as structural urban transformation.
