Transforming a working marina into a resilient waterfront destination.
The Westhaven Marina Strategy establishes a long-term framework to transform the Southern Hemisphere’s largest operational marina into a resilient and publicly accessible waterfront precinct. Developed in collaboration with Westhaven Marina and the Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO), the plan repositions the marina as both working infrastructure and waterfront destination.
The strategy conceives the marina edge as a dynamic coastal interface rather than a linear edge. A new promenade provides a unifying and connecting element that enables continuous waters edge access. Expanded open spaces and upgraded coastal structures create introducing new opportunities to engage with the harbour. Climate adaptation and coastal resilience are embedded within the infrastructure upgrades and open spaces ensuring long-term environmental performance.
The plan balances operational marina requirements with public realm enhancement. Environmental improvements - including green infrastructure, seawall habitat retrofits and coastal planting - improve water quality and biodiversity while strengthening ecological resilience. Sequential delivery enables staged transformation without compromising marina operations.
Westhaven now operates as multi-layered waterfront system - integrating marine industry, public access, ecological restoration and strategic development opportunities. The plan demonstrates how working waterfronts can evolve into resilient, activated and publicly engaged places.
