Sustainable streets shaped by green infrastructure.

Madden and Pakenham Streets transform two former service corridors into slow-speed, shared-surface connections that re-establish historic east–west links to the harbour. Positioned within the evolving Wynyard Central innovation precinct, the streets prioritise walking, cycling and urban amenity while strengthening connections to working waterfront activities and key heritage buildings.

The design responds to Wynyard’s industrial morphology, marine context and sustainability ambitions. The streets operate as connective tissue between waterfront and innovation district, embedding water-sensitive urban design and biodiversity within the public realm while supporting adjacent commercial activation.

Shared surface principles dissolve conventional kerb hierarchies and create legible pedestrian-priority environments. Integrated stormwater systems, native planting and bespoke industrial-inspired seating establish a coherent coastal design language aligned with the wider Quarter. The project piloted the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) green infrastructure rating tool - becoming the first public realm project in New Zealand to achieve a ‘Leading’ design rating. The projects have also been featured as a case study by the National Association of City Transport Officials (NACTO).

Madden and Pakenham Streets operate as high-performing urban corridors - combining sustainability innovation, movement recalibration and heritage resonance. They demonstrate how technical excellence and landscape-led thinking can redefine the everyday street as civic and ecological infrastructure.
