Project NEXT establishes a long-term vision for South Melbourne Market that strengthens its role as civic, cultural and economic anchor within inner Melbourne. Developed in collaboration with Woods Bagot, the masterplan expands the public realm beyond the market hall - integrating streets, plazas and fine-grain spaces into a cohesive pedestrian-priority precinct.

The strategy responds to the market’s historic urban grid, surrounding residential intensification and the need for greater permeability and dwell space. The precinct currently lacks generous public realm when compared to leading markets internationally; the masterplan therefore positions streets and open space as critical infrastructure for occupation, activation and community life.

Four key urban moves recalibrate the precinct. The Coventry Street Axis establishes a strong east–west pedestrian spine linking Ferrars and Clarendon Streets. Cecil Street becomes a flexible shared surface that extends market life into the street and adapts to operational modes. York Street is redefined as the market’s front door with activated edges and new north-facing plaza spaces. On-site amenity introduces fine-grain courtyards and a productive community garden, strengthening permeability and identity.

South Melbourne Market will operates as expanded civic precinct - flexible, adaptable and capable of hosting daily trade, events and community gatherings within a high-quality public realm.
