This plan integrates the proposed refurbishment of the market into its inner Melbourne urban context and develops a expanded public realm that enables the market to accommodate a wider range of place making and activation opportunities within a high quality, pedestrian priority environment.

LandLAB were engaged by South Melbourne Market to work collaboratively with Woods Bagot to develop a vision and masterplan for the market precint in South Melbourne - Project NEXT.

There is currently a lack of both internal and external public realm spaces for use by visitors when compared to other markets nationally and internationally. This limits the ability for occupation and dwelling as well as broader place making and event opportunities. Our appraoch was informed by the following key urban design moves:

The Coventry Street Axis - Connecting Ferrars Street and Clarendon Street with a great east- west pedestrian priority street environment that provides a public realm focus for the market.

Cecil Street Shared Space_ - A flexible and adaptable shared street/ surface that responds to different traffic and market operational modes. An extension of the market into the street.

York Street - Create the markets front door and address. New entrances, activities and occupation of the street edge. A comfortable north facing footpath activated by the market, new street trading pavillions that support public life.

On Site Amenity - A network of fine grain and small spaces that provide permeability and legibility. A new north facing plaza on York Street frontage. A new productive community garden on vacant Vic Track land.

The outcome is an urbane, flexible and adaptable public realm able to support a wider range of experiences and activities that integrate the market into its urban context and adjacent communities.
