TAHUNA QUEENSTOWN STREETSCAPES

About

Queenstown Streetscapes program is the flagship project of the Queenstown Town Centre Masterplan, delivering transformational change to the heart of Queenstown by providing new spaces and experiences for people.

The project has transformed central Queenstown and provided it with a new pedestrian and social focal point as intended by the Town Centre Masterplan. The program of projects is a step towards achieving a car free town centre and a street and laneway network that provides an urban experience on par with Queenstown’s natural landscape. LandLAB are providing urban design leadership for the Queenstown Streetscapes project - the signature project for the Queenstown Masterplan.

These re-imagined streets deliver transformational change to Queenstown’s Historic Core, reprioritising conventional streets into pedestrian focused shared spaces. In developing the palette for this project, references have been drawn from the vast landscape context. The Wakatipu landscape is immense, made up of both dramatic geological formations and unique ecological systems. The project looks to connect these broader landscape conditions with the ‘look and feel’ of Queenstown’s Town Centre.

These broader themes each have a place in how the ‘look and feel’ will be developed. The dramatic geological context informs the ground plane and paving strategies. The unique ecologies of the region informs the planting strategies. The historic and social context informs occupation and furniture strategies. The events, festival and night time economy informs a flexible lighting strategy.

Two important City Centre Masterplan moves have been realised with this project. The east-west ‘Gardens to Gondola’ connection between Park and Brecon Street and the north-south ‘Lake to Mountain’ public transport spine along Beach Street.

The scope of work includes Upper Brecon Street, The Historic Core (including Lower Brecon Street, Rees Street, Lower Beach Street and Upper Beach Street) and Park Street - all within Queenstowns existing Town Centre.
