KARANGAHAPE ROAD UPGRADE

A pedestrian-priority, multi-modal street for a diverse urban community.

Karangahape Road transforms a vehicle-dominated corridor into a cohesive, multi-modal and pedestrian-focused main street. What began as a brief to introduce a cycle lane evolved into a holistic public realm upgrade - rebalancing movement, strengthening identity and enhancing everyday life along one of Auckland’s most creative and diverse streets.

The design responds to the historic significance of the Karangahape ridgeline as a traditional walking route connecting Maungawhau to the Waitematā. Developed in partnership with mana whenua and local communities, the project acknowledges both cultural heritage and contemporary urban character. The strategy reallocates street space - increasing non-vehicle public realm from 30% to 50% - prioritising walking, cycling and public transport while maintaining K Road’s unique intensity.

Separated cycleways, widened footpaths, new street trees and integrated rain gardens establish a resilient and legible streetscape. Mahi toi elements, developed in collaboration with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei artist Tessa Harris and local students, embed cultural narrative within the infrastructure — including the repurposing of overbridge screens as woven tukutuku panels referencing Mangawhau and the harbour. A restrained material palette ensures the street remains urban, cohesive and authentically “K Road.”

Karangahape Road now operates as cultural corridor and sustainable transport spine. It provides greater mobility choice, increased green space and improved amenity while preserving the character shaped by its community. The project demonstrates how landscape-led design can recalibrate transport infrastructure without diluting identity.
