Merging ecology, resilience and amenity through landscape as infrastructure.
Vaughans Stream Reserve establishes a new 20-hectare park that anchors Long Bay’s expanding coastal neighbourhood. Rather than treating open space as residual development land, the project positions the restored stream corridor as primary ecological and social infrastructure - shaping the identity of the community from the outset.
The design responds to the existing riparian ecology, coastal topography and wider movement networks converging at the site. The strategy stitches ecological restoration together with stormwater management and recreational programming, reinforcing the stream as living system within an urbanising catchment.
A family of boardwalks, bridges and pavilions articulate circulation and occupation across the reserve. The signature Vaughans Stream Bridge reconceives conventional bridge typology through a horizontal, landscape-led form that preserves sightlines to the wider coastal environment while acting as focal point within the park. Stormwater systems are integrated visibly into the landscape, reinforcing environmental education and performance.
Vaughans Stream Reserve now operates as ecological corridor, community parkland and coastal gateway. It demonstrates how landscape-led planning can align environmental restoration with suburban growth - embedding resilience, recreation and identity within a cohesive park network.
