VXV PLAZA
36°50'34"S 174°45'37"E_ Viaduct Harbour_ Tāmaki Makaurau - Auckland_
A verdant urban room on the edge of the Waitematā Harbour.
VXV Plaza transforms an under-performing commercial courtyard into a vibrant and environmentally responsive public space at the intersection of the Viaduct and Victoria precincts. The project repositions the plaza as a destination within the wider waterfront network, strengthening its relationship to adjacent retail, hospitality and workplace environments.
The design responds to the harbour-edge context and the layered urban fabric of the Viaduct X Victoria precinct. The strategy acknowledges both the intensity of the surrounding commercial environment and the broader volcanic and coastal landscapes of Tāmaki Makaurau - positioning the plaza as a green counterpoint within a dense urban setting.
Vehicle access and circulation are rationalised to prioritise pedestrian occupation and spatial clarity. Layered planting, sculptural landforms and flexible seating create a series of micro-environments that support informal gathering, dining and events. Materiality and spatial sequencing draw subtle references to the harbour and volcanic motutere, grounding the plaza in local landscape identity while maintaining a contemporary urban character.
VXV Plaza now operates as urban destination and social catalyst - enhancing environmental comfort and supporting the economic vitality of the precinct.
