Transforming a working wharf into a coastal destination that connects whenua, moana and community.
Wakatu Quay reimagines Kaikōura’s working waterfront as a new civic and community destination, grounded in the cultural history, geology and ecology of its coastal setting. Developed with Warren and Mahoney following a winning design competition in 2021, the masterplan connects the township to the quay and opens opportunities to experience the dramatic relationship between mountains, sky and sea.
LandLAB’s role encompasses the design and delivery of the public realm. Engagement with local mana whenua began at Takahanga Marae, where the project team was introduced to hapū members and the significant features and stories of the surrounding landscape. These relationships and narratives inform a design that celebrates local identity and supports manaakitanga through spaces for gathering, learning and everyday occupation.
A central wharf promenade provides the organising spine, connecting whenua and moana and linking a sequence of active, reflective and educational spaces. Beachfront and streetscape improvements shape the arrival experience and establish an ātea at the landward approach. Flexible gathering and event spaces support community programming, while an accessible coastal edge strengthens social and ecological connections with the sea.
The public realm brings these experiences together within a working wharf setting, creating a distinctive place for locals and visitors. Drawing on Kaikōura’s geological materiality and enduring maritime character, Wakatu Quay establishes a framework for renewed public life at the water’s edge.
